Concert Review: Slaughterhouse at the El Rey

A few days after the release of their mixtape, “On The House,” VIBE caught up with the supergroup, Slaughterhouse at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles, CA. With chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and the crowd consisting mostly of male hip-hop heads, the venue was just right. As soon as the curtains went up, the DJ began hyping up the audience, with current radio bangers like “Niggas in Paris” and classic hits like “Still D.R.E.” Soon after, Slaughterhouse made their way to stage, high energy, and ready to party.

The audience was pumped and Joell Ortiz immediately urged everybody to throw their hands up, and they began with “Sound Off” a song off their ’09 album, Slaughterhouse. Some memorable moments included: Joell Ortiz chugging Jack Daniels on stage, Joe Budden in an attempt to impress us with a slide, fell and slipped instead. Crooked I brought the house down with his freestyle, getting everyone pumped up for the quality lyrical play of the night. At one point during a dance off between Royce da 5’9 and Joell Ortiz says “You think I’m a big N*gga, I can’t dance?” and joked with the crowd by busting a silly move, which then led into the song “Hammer Dance” off their upcoming album, Welcome To Our House.

Between many of the songs, the group joked with each other and had amusing conversations, which really engaged the audience. Slaughterhouse has a true stage presence, and they definitely slaughtered the house with some of the illest lyrics in the rap game.
